Distintivo H

The “Distinctive H” is the certification granted by the Ministry of Tourism, supported by the Ministry of Health to providers of food and beverages that meet stringent requirements defined by the “H Program”.

The H Program is a competitive factor for establishments that offer food and beverages; It contributes to raise the quality of services and improving health, giving the customer greater and improved productivity through the reduction of diseases transmitted by food, resulting in lower absenteeism disability.

What is Distinctive H?

The Distinctive H is a recognition that is granted for expiring with the standards of hygiene that mark the Mexican Norm NMX-F605 NORMEX 2004.


The Program “H” was created in 1988 to respond to a government strategy of diminishing the incidents of diseases transmitted by food, to earn more foreign currencies through tourism, and to improve Mexico’s worldwide image.

In 1990, tourism represented the third most important source of income for Mexico and thanks to the program currently is the second. However, it was observed that it has had more impact at the national level than expected. Nowadays, it is a factor of competitiveness for establishments offering food and beverage services.

Obtaining the Distinctive H implies compliance with 92 standards divided into two categories: critics (19) and NO critics (73).

The difference is determined by the degree of risk of contamination and its severity. The critical points are those in which the risk is greater and therefore its true control.
